Dr. Miloš Michlovský
Doc. Ing. Miloš Michlovský, DrSc. is one of the leading Czech experts in the field of viticulture, vineyard care and grapevine breeding. He is undoubtedly a pioneer in introducing new technologies and methods and putting that knowledge into practice. As a renowned expert, he often takes part in the evaluation committees of winemaking competitions, of which, and not only, his wines are gaining prizes.
Miloš Michlovský was born in Hustopeče 1953. After his secondary education at the Viticulture School, Valtice (GCSE), he graduated fom the Faculty of Horticulture of the Russian State Agrarian University, Moscow. 1985 he finished his doctoral studies with his graduation thesis "Agrobiological and technological evaluation of resistant vine hybrids of the Institute for Viticulture and Oenology, Moldova as a prospective for the European regions of the Ukraine and Czechoslovakia". He also carried out practice in hybridisation spent time at the Institute for Viticulture and Oenology, Moldova, and also at Magarich - the Wine-growing and Viticulture Institute in Yalta. Simultaneously, he was one of the founders of the Resistant Science and Production Association. From 1991 to 1994, he lectured at the Horticultural Faculty in Lednice, the Agricultural University in Brno. In 2001, he graduated with his habilitation of vines thesis "Development of grape breeding for resistance and its current situation in the Czech Republic" and was appointed Associate Professor of Horticulture. He expanded his professional growth in Moscow in 2005 by defending a major doctorate on "The processing of scientific and application principles of the selection of viruses on resistance in a biological viticulture system in the Czech Republic".
His professional career has been devoted to the cultivation of grapevine varieties resistant to biotic (fungal diseases, pests), abiotic factors (frost, drought), and vine growing. Doc. Ing. Miloš Michlovský, DrSc. is currently among the most important breeders of grapevines in our country. In 1994 he privatized the Breeding Institute in Perná. The main directions of breeding activity are the creation of new vine varieties with increased resistance and maintenance cultivation. The white grape varieties Pálava and Aurelius were cultivated there between 1946 and 1989. In 2001 the varieties Agni, Ariana, Lena and subsequently the varieties with group resistance Malverina and Laurot were added. Another new resistant variety, Rinot, was registered in 2008. In 2010, the Nativa and Savilon varieties were registered, and the Vesna variety in 2012. Subsequently, the new Medea variety (2014) was also registered. The Perná Institute develops viticulture technologies aimed at significant increases in the density of vines in the vineyard. Since 2004, other vineyards with more than 10 thousand vines on 1 ha have been planted.
"The high quality and true terroir guarantee is only in very dense planting which forces the roots to grow deeper" says Doc. Michlovský.
His oenological practice is virtually saturated with innovative technologies. In recent years, it has been the production of low-alcohol and non-alcoholic sparkling wines, as well as the top production of natural fermentation in oak barrels followed by more than one-year maturation without sulphur dioxide, its overall content after bottling generally does not exceed 40-50 mg/l in red wines and 40-65 mg/l in whites.
